Peter and the wolf

A stage production by Nina Vogel, based on the work of Sergei Prokofiev

Commissioned by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) in 2021, this stage production offers a new take on Peter and the Wolf, in which Prokofiev’s musical world is extended through an original theatrical adaptation.

Conceived, created, and performed by Nina Vogel, this stage production is the result of a collaborative research project developed with instrument makers, a mechanic, and a costume designer in São Paulo. From this collaboration emerged a world in which costumes, puppets, objects, and musical instruments come together to form a true visual extension of the orchestra.

As a soloist, Nina Vogel single-handedly carries this stage design, inviting each audience member to expand upon the images and stories suggested by the musical tale.

To perform a play on her own that normally requires the work of an entire troupe, the artist starts from the concept that all the characters in the play share the same stage space—the “musical forest”—here represented in the form of a costume-set, composed of violin parts designed and custom-built for the show, brought to life by the puppeteer’s movements. The costume thus becomes the stage and also features large hidden pockets from which the characters of the fable emerge.

ANIMA traces the creative process behind Peter and the Wolf, following the various stages of designing the stage production: artistic research, experimentation with performance costumes, the crafting of puppets, props, and musical instruments, as well as the collaborations that gave shape to this world.

Its title echoes the “soul” (the term for the sound post in French and other languages) —that small piece of wood at the heart of stringed instruments, essential to their resonance. It also evokes the world of puppetry, where objects, shapes, and puppets come to life through movement. Straddling the worlds of instrument-making and theater, ANIMA reveals what drives the creative process.
